Recon vs New Car in Malaysia (2027 Verdict)

By Matthew, Angsa Emas · Updated October 2026

Recon is worth it in 2027 if you want a premium car for far less money and you will check the car properly. New is worth it if you want a full local warranty and no inspection work. Our Alphard 2.5 Z is RM239,000 to RM313,000, and a new one starts from RM548k per Paultan.

I am Matthew at Angsa Emas, a recon dealer, so factor in that I sell recon. I will show you where new wins. For the wider picture, start with our best recon cars in Malaysia guide and the buying guide.

How much cheaper is a recon car than a new one?

On the two cars where I have a verified new price, the gap is large. A new Alphard starts from RM548k per Paultan, and our recon Alphard 2.5 Z is RM239,000 to RM313,000. A new RX350 Luxury was seen at RM468,888, and our recon RX350 is RM269,000 to RM358,000.

Compare the same trim and year. A recon car and a new car are rarely identical in options, so the real saving depends on the exact pair you compare. I have no verified new price for the Land Cruiser 300, so I leave it out.

Recon vs new: the full comparison table

Recon wins on price and on the choice of premium models. New wins on warranty, local history and peace of mind. Neither is always better. This table shows the points that decide it for most buyers, from price to condition risk, and you can screenshot it for your family discussion.

Does a recon car have a warranty?

It depends on the dealer. A new car comes with the manufacturer warranty. A recon car has no such automatic warranty, so any cover comes from the dealer. Ask what it covers, how long it runs and who does the repair. Get it in writing. A verbal promise is not enough.

I will not state a warranty length for any dealer here, because I would only be guessing. The same goes for us: ask me on WhatsApp for the terms on the exact car you want.

Is a recon car safe to buy?

Yes, if you check it properly. The risks are hidden accident repair, tampered records and a car with no local service history. You reduce them by reading the auction sheet, checking the grade, inspecting the car in person and paying for a third-party inspection on a premium car.

Our grade and auction sheet checklist gives the numbered list. Follow it on every car, from any dealer.

Which loses value faster, recon or new?

A new car usually loses the most in RM in its first years, because you start from a higher price. A recon car starts lower, so the RM drop can be smaller. Percentage and RM are different things, so be careful with claims. Nobody can promise resale, including me.

What helps resale on either: a popular model, low mileage, a clean grade and complete documents. What hurts: accident repair, missing records and an unpopular colour.

Which is better for resale?

A popular model with a clean grade and low mileage sells more easily, whether it started as recon or new. A recon car with R or RA on the sheet is harder to sell later. Buy the clean grade now, even if it costs a little more, and you keep your options open.

What are the real risks of buying recon?

The three that matter: a car with a hidden repair, a car with no usable record, and a dealer who will not put promises in writing. Each one can be checked. Ask for the auction sheet, ask for the warranty terms in writing, and inspect the car with someone who knows cars.

How do I pay for each option?

Both can be financed. Banks often treat recon cars like new car loans because they are not registered in Malaysia before you. Maybank Islamic lists unregistered recon financing up to 90% of the invoice and up to 108 months. Terms may change, so ask your bank for the current offer.

The Hire-Purchase (Amendment) Act 2026, in force from 1 June 2026, sets reducing-balance interest as the standard for new agreements. Read the loan guide for a worked example.

So which one should I buy?

Buy recon if the saving is large and you are willing to inspect. Buy new if a full local warranty matters more than the saving, or if you do not want to check a car. For an Alphard, see the recon Alphard price guide.

FAQ

Is recon cheaper than new in Malaysia?

Yes, on the examples I have. A new Alphard starts from RM548k per Paultan, and our recon Alphard 2.5 Z is RM239,000 to RM313,000. A new RX350 Luxury was seen at RM468,888, and our recon RX350 is RM269,000 to RM358,000.

Does a recon car have a warranty?

It depends on the dealer. Ask for the cover in writing, with what it includes, how long and who repairs the car.

Is a recon car worth it in 2027?

For many buyers, yes, if you inspect the car and read the auction sheet. If you want zero checking and a full local warranty, new is the easier choice.

What are the risks of a recon car?

Hidden accident repair, no local service history and weak promises from the seller. Check the grade, inspect the car and get terms in writing.

Which is better for resale, recon or new?

A popular model with a clean grade and low mileage sells best. Resale cannot be promised for either.

Can I get a loan for a recon car?

Yes. Banks often treat recon cars like new car loans. Maybank Islamic lists up to 90% of the invoice and up to 108 months for unregistered recon cars. Confirm with your bank.

Is a recon car the same as a used car?

Not exactly. A recon car is imported and not registered in Malaysia before you. A used car already has a local owner and record. The Chinese explainer covers the difference in plain terms.
