Recon Car Loan in Malaysia (2027 Guide to EIR, Margin and Tenure)

By Matthew, Angsa Emas · Updated October 2026

A recon car loan in Malaysia in 2027 should use reducing-balance interest, quoted as an effective interest rate (EIR). The Hire-Purchase (Amendment) Act 2026 set that standard from 1 June 2026. Some lenders have until 31 March 2027, so ask. See our best recon cars and the grade guide.

I am Matthew from Angsa Emas. I am a car dealer, not a bank or a financial adviser, so check every term with your lender. This page explains the rules in plain English, shows a worked example with round numbers, and lists the questions to put to the bank.

What changed for car loans on 1 June 2026?

The Hire-Purchase (Amendment) Act 2026 came into force on 1 June 2026 for new agreements. It abolished the Rule of 78 and made reducing-balance interest the standard, with EIR as the rate to compare. The old BLR was renamed Reference Rate, mostly a terminology change.

Digital signatures are also accepted for hire-purchase agreements. Sources: Motorist.my and The Vibes. The law applies to new agreements, so read your own agreement if you signed earlier.

What is EIR, and how is it different from a flat rate?

A flat rate charges interest on the full loan amount for the whole tenure, even as you pay it down. EIR charges interest only on the balance still owed. So a flat rate looks small, and the same number as an EIR would cost you less. Compare lenders on EIR only.

This example uses round numbers to show the idea. It is not our price and not a bank quote. Take a loan of RM100,000 over 5 years (60 months).

Rate typeRateTotal interestMonthly payment
Flat rate3% flatRM15,000RM1,916.67
EIR (reducing balance)3% EIRabout RM7,812about RM1,796.87
EIR that matches the 3% flat paymentabout 5.6% EIRabout RM15,000RM1,916.67

Read the last row: a 3% flat rate over 5 years costs about the same as a 5.6% EIR. A bank offering 3% flat is not offering you a 3% rate in the EIR sense. This is the number to ask for.

How much of a recon car can I borrow?

It depends on the bank and the product. Maybank Islamic lists unregistered recon financing at up to 90% of the invoice, and second-hand cars at 85%. Banks often treat recon cars like new car loans because they are not registered in Malaysia before you. That page has no date, so bank terms may change.

At 90% financing you would pay at least 10% of the invoice yourself, plus any fees and insurance. Other banks differ. Ask for the exact figure in writing for the exact car.

What is the maximum loan tenure for a recon car?

Maybank Islamic lists up to 108 months, which is 9 years, for unregistered recon cars. Bank Muamalat covers new, used and unregistered recon cars with up to 9 years tenure, per its flyer in Feb 2026. Its recon margin was not stated. Terms may change, so confirm with the bank.

A longer tenure lowers the monthly payment and raises the total interest. Pick the shortest tenure your budget can carry. A 9 year loan on a car you may sell in 4 years can leave you owing more than the car is worth.

What is the margin on a recon car loan?

I do not have a verified current rate to quote, so I will not give one. Islamic banks call the cost a profit or margin rate, and conventional banks call it interest. Ask each bank for its rate on recon cars, expressed as an EIR or an equivalent figure, in writing and for your tenure.

Do not compare a bank flat rate to another bank EIR. Ask both to quote on the same basis.

What happens if I settle my loan early?

Ask your bank for the early settlement formula in writing before you sign. The Rule of 78, an older method that weighted interest to the early months, was abolished for new agreements from 1 June 2026. I will not give figures for rebates or fees, because they differ by bank and agreement.

Who has until 31 March 2027 to switch to EIR?

Providers that need more time to update systems have until 31 March 2027 to transition. So some lenders may not apply EIR yet, per RinggitPlus. Do not assume. Ask the lender if your quote is on a reducing-balance basis, and ask them to state the EIR on the offer letter.

If a lender will not state the EIR, compare another lender.

What should I ask the bank before I sign?

Put these ten questions to every bank and get the answers in writing before you sign anything. Compare the answers side by side, and drop any lender that will not state its EIR on the offer letter. The ten questions are:

  1. What is the EIR on this loan, not just the flat rate?
  2. Is interest charged on a reducing balance?
  3. What is the tenure, and what is the monthly payment?
  4. What is the maximum amount I can borrow against this car, as a percent of the invoice?
  5. What is the down payment, and which fees are on top?
  6. What is the early settlement formula and any penalty?
  7. Is insurance required, and can I choose the insurer?
  8. What happens if I miss a payment?
  9. Are there processing, stamp duty or other fees, and what are they?
  10. Does this offer apply to an unregistered recon car, and how long is the offer valid?

How do I compare loans for the car I want?

Take the same loan amount and tenure to two or three banks and ask for the EIR and the monthly payment. Compare the total you pay across the full loan, not only the monthly figure. For the models we stock, see the Alphard, Harrier and RX350 guides.

Our Alphard 2.5 Z runs RM239,000 to RM313,000, the Harrier RM134,000 to RM193,000 and the RX350 RM269,000 to RM358,000. Use those ranges, not the example above, when you work out your own numbers.

FAQ

What is the interest rate for a recon car loan in Malaysia?

It varies by bank, tenure and your profile, and I will not quote a rate I cannot verify. Ask each bank for its EIR on recon cars in writing. Do not compare a flat rate with an EIR.

What changed for car loans on 1 June 2026?

The Hire-Purchase (Amendment) Act 2026 took effect for new agreements. The Rule of 78 was abolished, reducing-balance interest became the standard with EIR as the comparison rate, and BLR was renamed Reference Rate.

What is the difference between EIR and flat rate?

Flat rate charges interest on the original loan for the whole tenure. EIR charges interest on the balance still owed. In my RM100,000 example, 3% flat over 5 years costs about the same as a 5.6% EIR.

Can I get a loan for a recon car in Malaysia?

Yes. Banks often treat recon cars like new car loans because they are not registered in Malaysia before you. Maybank Islamic lists up to 90% of the invoice and up to 108 months for unregistered recon cars. Terms may change.

How long can the tenure be?

Maybank Islamic lists up to 108 months, and Bank Muamalat lists up to 9 years. Confirm current terms with your bank.

What is the down payment for a recon car?

At 90% financing the minimum down payment is 10% of the invoice, plus fees. Other banks differ, so ask for the figure in writing for your car.

Do all lenders use EIR now?

Not necessarily. Providers that need more time have until 31 March 2027 to transition, so ask the lender to state the EIR on your offer.
