Recon Car Grade Meaning and Auction Sheet Checklist (2027)
Recon car grades describe condition on the Japanese auction sheet. Grade 5 is near flawless, 4 to 4.5 is slightly used with minimal blemishes, and R or RA means the car was repaired after an accident. Interior is graded separately from A to D. Use this with our best recon cars in Malaysia guide and the loan guide.
I am Matthew from Angsa Emas. These grades are an industry convention used by dealers and listing sites, not an official government standard. Dealers read them slightly differently, so the notes on the sheet and your own inspection always come first.
What does each recon car grade mean?
Here is the usual reading. Body grade comes first, then interior letter, so a car marked 4.5 B has a 4.5 body and a B interior. These meanings are convention. Dealer and listing wording varies, so check the sheet notes.
| Grade | Usual meaning |
|---|---|
| 5 | Near flawless, very few or no marks |
| 4.5 | Slightly used, minimal blemishes |
| 4 | Slightly used, a few visible marks |
| 3.5 | Average condition, more visible wear or marks |
| R | Repaired, the car had accident repair |
| RA | Repaired accident, also flags repair history |
| Interior A | Best interior, very clean |
| Interior B | Good, light wear |
| Interior C | Average, visible wear |
| Interior D | Poor, heavy wear or damage |
Where I give a meaning for 3.5 and the interior letters, treat it as the common convention. Ask the dealer to point to the notes on the sheet that support the grade.

What does grade 4.5 B mean on a recon car?
It means a 4.5 body grade, so slightly used with minimal blemishes, and a B interior, so good with light wear. It is a common, sensible target for most buyers. Always confirm by looking at the car. A grade is a summary, and your own eyes decide whether the car is right.
Is grade 5 better than grade 4.5?
On paper, yes, because grade 5 is near flawless. In practice the gap can be small, and a grade 5 car often costs more. A clean 4.5 with a good interior and a clear sheet can be a better buy than a grade 5 with unclear notes. Compare price, mileage and notes together.
What do R and RA mean on an auction sheet?
R and RA flag that the car was repaired after an accident. Dealers use them slightly differently, so ask for the sheet notes and a diagram of the repaired area. A repaired car is not always a bad car, but it should cost less, and you should inspect it with extra care. Many buyers simply avoid R and RA.
If you are considering one, get a third-party inspection first and ask how the repair was done.
How do I read a recon car auction sheet?
Read it in this order: the grade and interior letter, the diagram of marked panels, the written notes, the mileage and the date. The diagram uses short codes to mark scratches, dents and repairs. Ask the dealer to explain every mark on the diagram. Do not accept a summary alone.
Note that the date on the sheet may differ from the manufacture date. Ask for both, and check the dates against each other.
Can the mileage on a recon car be tampered with?
It can happen, so do not rely on the odometer alone. Check the mileage against the auction sheet, the wear on the seats, steering wheel and pedals, and any service records. If the numbers and the wear do not match, walk away. Ask for the sheet itself, not a photo of the odometer.
What should I inspect on a recon car in person?
Use the numbered checklist below on every car, from any dealer, including us. Go in daylight, take your time, and take a friend who knows cars if you can. Do not skip the test drive, and do not feel rushed into a deposit. The list has 14 steps:
- Compare the auction sheet grade and notes with the car in front of you.
- Walk around the car in daylight and look at paint colour, panel gaps and reflections for repair signs.
- Check all four tyres for even wear and the same brand.
- Look under the bonnet and boot floor for welds, fresh sealant or mismatched paint.
- Check the chassis number on the car against the auction sheet and the documents.
- Open and close every door, the boot and any sliding doors, several times.
- Check the interior for wear on the seats, steering wheel, pedals and switches.
- Start the car cold and listen to the engine.
- Test every window, mirror, light, wiper and the air conditioning.
- Test the screen, camera, sensors and any driver assist features.
- Take a test drive and check for pulling, vibration, noises and brake feel.
- Look for warning lights on the dash.
- Ask for the warranty terms in writing.
- Ask what is included in the price and what is extra.
What are the red flags when buying a recon car?
Walk away if the seller will not show the auction sheet, will not let you inspect the car, will not put promises in writing, or pressures you to pay a deposit fast. Also be wary of a price far below the market, mismatched paint and numbers that do not agree between documents.
A good dealer welcomes questions. If you feel rushed, slow down.
Do I need a third-party inspection for a recon car?
For a premium or expensive car, yes, it is worth the cost. Imported cars usually have no local service history, so an independent inspector gives you a view that is not tied to the sale. A good seller will not mind. If the seller refuses, treat that as a red flag.
You can also use the buying guide for the full step-by-step process and the recon vs new guide for the trade-offs. For specific models, see the Harrier guide and Alphard guide.
